Escape to Barbados

Barbados luxury holidaysWith the European summer drawing to an end, the weather getting colder and days shorter, many people start to think about taking a winter holiday somewhere warm and sunny. There are dozens of destinations to choose from throughout the world, and one that proves popular with people seeking a sun, sea and sand holiday, is Barbados.

The Caribbean island of Barbados enjoys year around good weather, with the peak season being from December through to April. The island itself consists of the interior that features rolling hills, and the coastline which boasts beautiful beaches. Most holidaymakers will choose to stay along the coastal areas, where a range of accommodation is available to suit all budgets, from cheap and friendly guest-houses through to luxury hotels such as those offered by Only Exclusive Travel.

Staying in the coastal areas provides the holidaymaker with the chance to try many of the water sports activities that are available. The wind conditions make wind surfing a very popular pastime, and it is not uncommon for some people to base their vacation around windsurfing there. Other water based activities that can be enjoyed include sailing, water skiing, snorkelling and scuba diving.

One of the best things about a holiday in Barbados, is the relaxed pace of life and the friendliness of the people there. Holidaymakers should definitely try to get out and about during their time on the island, and visiting local markets is an excellent way to see a different side of life there. This could be combined with seeing one or more of the islands “must see” attractions, such as sugar plantations, lighthouses, historic buildings and rum distilleries.

The Sandpiper beach in BarbadosFood and drink plays an important part in any vacation, and a holiday in Barbados is no exception to this. Bajan cuisine blends influences from Africa, China, the Caribbean and Great Britain. Sea food in particular is popular, and a visit to Barbados would not be complete without trying Flying Fish. Normally served lightly breaded and fried, a very hot sauce accompanies it which should be used in moderation the first time around! Another local dish is called Pepperpot, which is a pork stew served in a brown, spicy sauce, and there are various chicken based dishes. Beef lovers will perhaps be left a little disappointed, as the islanders themselves eat very littler beef.

In terms of drink, Barbados is well known for its rum, and rum based drinks can be found in every bar and restaurant throughout the island. Mount Gay Rum is considered to be one of the best, but there are quite literally dozens of other brands available. Beer lovers will be pleased by the local brews which include 10 Saints and Banks Beer. A tour of the Banks Brewery is possible, and those that arrive early can avail themselves of the free beer on offer!

A holiday in Barbados is suitable for couples and families alike, and is the perfect antidote to the cold, European winter. Both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operate flights from the UK, and within a few hours, one can enjoy the Caribbean sunshine and way of life that makes Barbados such a wonderful island.
